PSP UMD — piracy begins

Posted March 31st, 2005 in Misc. by Mouly

Sony PSP can play only the videos in the company’s proprietory format. This means that even if you own a legal copy of a movie, you will have to buy a UMD version to view the movie in a PSP. But as expected, a tool has been developed (by Sajeeth Cherian) that converts a regular video file into a PSP video. For more go to PSP Video9 and this Wired article.

Haiku

Some of the haikus that I like

No one travels
Along this way but I,
This autumn evening.

An old pond!
A frog jumps in-
The sound of water.

IBM — ready to Cell

Posted March 23rd, 2005 in Misc. by Mouly

There are two ways you can look at Cell, one – the
processor of PS3, two – IBM’s plan to recapture the PC market.

For people who have just landed on earth, Cell is the microprocessor designed jointly by IBM, Sony and Toshiba (called the STI). It has been developed for the Sony Playstation 3. Although the processor has been developed for gaming and entertainment, IBM has grand plans for Cell. If everything goes on their way they can possibly recapture the PC market with their little baby.

Rambus has developed the interface for the buses in the Cell processor.

By Michael Kanellos

IBM developed a computer that can beat a chess master. Now it’s coined research that may let a machine outfox a badger.

Desrt Rose Lyrics

Posted March 22nd, 2005 in Misc. by Mouly

One of my all time favorite song is Desert Rose. Here is the lyrics

Words and music by sting

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams that tie two hearts that will never die
And near the flames
The shadows play in the shape of the man’s desire

This desert rose
Whose shadow bears the secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume that would torture you more than this

And now she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing’s as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
The rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Whose shadow bears the secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume that would torture you more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of hidden hearts and souls
This desert flower
This rare perfurme is the sweet intoxication of love

Cellular Automation

Posted March 22nd, 2005 in Misc. by Mouly

My second post after a long time :-)
Came across this ‘cellular automation’- seems pretty interesting and equally complex. Right now I’m not in a position to give a short explanation. But like everything you can get a fair idea from wikipedia- here
